Senate finds the PLDT-Digitel merger OK!!!

“We didn’t find any violation on the part of Digitel and PLDT. We’re leaving it up to the NTC to decide the legality and other issues like frequency,” the Inquirer.net quotes Sen. Ramon Revilla Jr., chair of the public services committee, as saying. Revilla said that both the Digitel and PLDT had separate franchises and thus do not need congress approval for their deal. This issue therefore is up to our regulatory friend, the National Telecommunications Commission, for approval. Interesting.

Last March, the PLDT announced that it would acquire a majority stake of Digitel. Of course the deal, as many of us knew, was being questioned by a lot of parties, including Globe Telecom. Last month, a hearing occurred about this pathetic issue. Since the hearing is far from reality, the NTC, our friend, is at least doing their job with regard to this controversy. Does the senate care for us, consumers? No? Why? Corruption? Really?

  2. i think that since PLDT and Digitel are private companies and not own by the government, Government don't have the right to stop the merging of the two companies unless they want to be paid(suhol para hindi sila makialam) by those companies.

business yun eh. kung kailangan nila magmerge, edi merge. ang magagawa lang ng globe make their promos more cheaper. to the government, they should make there own company to fight other companies and make there best offer at a very low price that consumer will go to them and cheaper than other companies.

    =) =) =)
We should inquire about this PLDT-Digitel merger because it will definitely affects the consumers(eg. cellphone & internet users). Let’s just hope that there will be good market competitors to compete against this corporate giant.
We must request from the Congress to really investigate the deal and its effects to us… ordinary citizens who use cellphone and internet services regularly. We hope that they judge it decisively for public interest.
At sa GLOBE Telecom naman, they must remain focused on its strategy of delivering superior, relevant services to its customers.. dapat d muna maapektuhan ang serbisyo nila, ang customers din nila ang maapektuhan. let the congress and government regulators decide on this matters.......

  4. Senate has no right to to stop what PLDT and Digitel wants to do. It is part of their business. I think they have their own reasons why they are doing that. As for me, one thing reason came to my mind is, these both companies is bankrupt. And for Globe, they should double their duties to have a good output for them to fight in the business by this two merging companies..They should not be afraid....

The government has nothing to do with this issue. They don't have the right to stop the merging of two companies, because it's none of their business. Competition is always part of building a business. Hindi mo maiiwasan ang mga ganitong pangyayari, kasi it's a matter of saving your company from being bankrupt. If this is their decision, then let it be! Since Globe Telecom has got nothing to do with this issue... mas mabuti pang i-improve nalang nila ang services nila at sana gawin nilang mas affordable ang load and etc. DADAGAN SANA NILA NG MARAMING PAKULO PARA MAGING PATOK ANG COMPANY NILA SA MGA CONSUMERS! :DDDD

  6. Though PLDT and Digitel are both private companies, what they are, which are telecommunication companies, rendering are being used as public utilities. Therefore, the merging may greatly affect the masses. I believe that the government should be investigative enough about the merging, in the sense that they will find out the good that it may bring to the consumers, and at the same time, the benefit that the companies will have. Better deals, faster internet connections and affordable, reasonable pricing - this is what they should be offering after the merging happens.

  7. Even though the merging of the PLDT and Digitel are not anymore concern of the govern't yet the should be aware on what is going on with this issue because if this will be successful the govern't and especially us consumers will greatly be affected..Maybe they care for us but the fact that they are private companies so the govern't don't have the right to object with their merging issue for now. But they and also us must be vigilant about this issue.

  10. It's business. The government has no right to discontinue the merging of PLDT and Digitel. Furthermore, these are private companies. (I have to read more on this said topic for further information, so..) According to Inquirer, Globe Telecom opposes the PLDT-Digitel merger. Globe wants to have a fair redistributing of communication frequencies among the competing telecommunication companies. They're afraid! :D But the Globe has nothing to do, because it's business. Purely business.. Globe Telecom has to think an effective way so that their company will not ruined. In business, there will always be a competition. So, business strategy lang yan! :)

  11. Merging this two companies create monopoly and it makes no sense at all. Because they disregard free market competition and they don’t really care about their consumer’s social status. They only think of their own interest and not the welfare of competitors and consumers. If their reason is to help the consumers, why merge? Their company is not about building concrete structures or establishments, nor stop corruption and fight for freedom, if that is the reasons I will indeed agree for this merging proposal. But it’s not, there just one of another Black beard pirate who wants to rule every place they conquer.

  12. The government had nothing to do with this transaction like what Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said "there was no need for PLDT and Digitel to secure congressional approval for the deal, and that they could proceed with it. This is purely a private transaction,”...As clearly said wala naman tlgang pakealam ang gobyerno sa pagpaplano ng PLDT and Digitel na magsama kasi it's a private transaction so BAKA wala nman talagang nangyayari kadayaan o pagcocorrupt , the idea of merging their company is a business matter where this idea can be their way to have a very successful business. So globe telecom should do something para mapantayan o matapatan nila ang pagsasama ng dlawang company...Talagang sa lahat ng business may kakompetensiya kaya daapat handa sila sa mga ganito huwag nang magreklamo gumawa nlng ng paraan para hnd mapagiwanan ng panahon...

    that's all thank you! hehe

  13. The PLDT-Digitel merge is as legal as it gets thats the main point, government has nothing to do for it is a private transaction and as long as they comply with what the government requires for it to be legal. I do not know if senate do cares for us but they can not do anything about it but to relay it to the other agency that has the jurisdiction over that issue. Is the Merger legal? Yes, Does the Senate carea for us consumers? well, I can't tell as a general and its all up to the NTC...

  15. In business, it is their common practice to merge with other companies when they think they are losing or in the verge of bankruptcy. Business is business. The government has nothing to do with this. It's the choice of the two companies to do what they think is good to improve their own business.

The only problem with this issue is that consumers will surely suffer. Now that the merging happened, we should already expect for higher rates and worse service.

The Globe Telecom should not be afraid with this issue, instead they should be challenged to think for an idea kung paano makakakuha ng mas marami pang consumers. The idea should be -- lessen the rates, good service, more promos! That way, there will be a great satisfaction on both the company and consumers.

  16. @veritas_edgar there is no merger. This transaction involves divestment of the gokongweis in Digitel and the acquisition by PLDT of the said investment given up by the gokongweis.

  17. These two companies are both private. Since it is private the government’s power to them is limited. But I think if these private companies brought a bad thing to the consumers’ dapat pake alaman na ng senate. The good thing here is that if the PLDT and the DIGITEL (owner of the Sun Cellular) will merge services will be stronger as those will cover the entire country since the Sun Cell can now use the advance and extensive infrastructure of the PLDT. As we all know Sun Cell offers a cheaper load compared to Globe. The only problem with sun is that it has bad network coverage. But with this, the services of Sun cell will be great and we consumers can switch to Sun that offers cheaper loads.

  18. I don't see where the risks could fit in to this issue. If they want to merge companies, let them. After all, it's just business. Unless there could be possible deals under the table between the government and the private companies, that could pose a problem. I think it's possible, knowing the history of our government. Corruption is too common these days. And isn't monopoly bad for business?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Well We cant blame them. Its only a part of their business. A corruption is a common act these days. So monopolizing is also a part of business.

Personally, i can't actually feel the effect of the telco monopolization, or maybe not just yet. i think it is just a very good business move for the company of PLDT to merge/buy the company of Digitel, they way i look at it, it is just a good business deal. i think the senate cares because they take the time to at least talk about it, if they dont, i dont think they will spend any time to stress themselves about it

    ReplyDelete
  21. well, the senate is clearly playing safe.. klaro na they dont want to be a part of this issue >.< , and now , the final decision is up to the NTC, sana ung magiging decision nila is for the consumers best, para wala nang gulo :))

    ReplyDelete
  22. Since PLDT and Digitel are privately owned, I guess it's just proper for the senate to give this thing a thumbs up. It's PLDT and Digitel's business, they have nothing to do with it. I just hope these two are thinking about the consumers while making this decision. Because once these two will fuse, consumers will not be smiling for a while. Business will be affected as well, for competition will be reduced.

  23. Kawawa naman pala ang Globe Telco if ganun. Anyway, the issue about the PLDT-Digital merging, which the senate finds OK, uhh maybe one reason given is that the subscribers would enjoy more promos/etc which most of the subscribers or consumers would want to avail. But when it comes to business, monopolizing is not really advisable. For in business, you need competitors. For the question "Does the senate care for us, consumers?", prolly yes. In some way I guess. Hehe. Corruption? I don't think so. They're out if this sh*t, that's why it cannot be "corruption" for the senate. Blah2. :)

  24. The decision of the senate towards the issue of merging between PLDT and Digitel for me, was a right one..Certain organization such as National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) knows more about this issue,,making them the right people to decide..Lets just hope that the decision of the NTC will be for the benefit of the consumer...

  25. for me, the merging of the two private companies is cool! I mean, it's okay for me, since I'm flexible to any company. (haha!) pero parang it is very unfair for the kalaban of those two companies but that's life talaga. there's no fair in love and war.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The government was right in saying that they have no right to stop the merging of PLDT and Digitel since there are no rules violated by them.

But i think that the merging of two companies will create monopoly, which is not good for us people.

In the issue of Globe Telecom,i guess they must focus on how to get more consumers or panatiliing sakanila ung mga consumers. Good services nlg cguru,
pero matinding challenge yan sa Globe! go globe!

Yes, somehow that government care for us consumers.
Lastly, sana maging just yung decision ng NTC tungkol dito, at sana walang under the table na mangyayare between NTC and PLDT-Digetel^___^

    ReplyDelete
  27. For me, yes they care, they too are consumers that's why. but i also think that in most things that people do, corruption is always a question. May it affect us in small or big ways any dishonest act for self gain by any employee makes the whole process corrupt.

    ReplyDelete
  28. somehow I agree in merging the two. What they are doing is just business and siyempre to be the number one in the business you have to conquer all your business rivals. I find no problem in this merging of the two, like I said its just business. wala naman rin mawawala kung mag merge sila diba? Ginagawa lang naman nila ito para maparami ang kanilang mga user para maging malakas yun business nila. *bow* :)

The government has nothing to do with PLDT-Digitel Merging. The whole merging thing is just business, no corruption, just business. Globe on the other hand is afraid because they might get bankrupt, due to the fact pldt and digitel combined would have more products/promos to offer.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Errr. The government shouldn't stop their merging, it will always be a benefit for the people, giving more better products from the two companies. But if the companies violated any rule of our institution, that's the time the government should investigate.

I agree of the merge. I expect more better and affordable products from those companies (ULTRA HIGH SPEED INTERNET FTW).

    ReplyDelete
  31. We may never know what exactly the government, along with these companies, plan to accomplish. But merging of the two is just fine for me. It's business. Let them merge. Then we'll find out if there are indeed any improvements to the services they offer to their consumers.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think so, there's a bill that was passed i think something about minimizing cost on calls, and text but as to implementation, that's the job of the executive branch. the senate's inquiry and investigation on the merger of smart and sun cellular is proof of concern. As for the question if that's a form of corruption, it's easy to point fingers. It's easy to accuse. And besides, the senate has to focus on more pressing problems than on telco's consumers who can afford to buy phones and load.

  33. business is business ! if merging of this two companies is the only way two become more successful then GO ! at kung matutuloy ang pagkakaisa ng dalawang kumpanya na to. that's the time we can know what is the result. nowadays, corruption is already common it's already live in the nerves of the people, like in the Government. just so you know according to luna moonfang of DOTA.. "THE GUiLTY WiLL SUFFER".

    ReplyDelete
  34. The government should not interfere with the decision of the companies, lets hope for the best that if they'll merge, there would be more benefits for us consumers. and that it would not cost problems. >.<

    ReplyDelete
  35. \m/

It depends if merging of this two companies will be successful, then i will agree with it. The Govt. should not interfere in this issue, because the two companies are just doing business and there are no rules violated by them.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I don't really mind the merging of the two companies(PLDT and Digitel). I don't think the government has the right to stop the merging of the two since they didn't make any violations against the law. Besides, I've read from an article in the internet that Gokongwei wants to be out from the telecommunication business. So if it wasn't PLDT, it would have been Globe acquiring their stake.

    ReplyDelete
  37. If the Senate finds nothing wrong with the two companies merging and the NTC had already approved the legality for this two companies two merge, then I guess its okay. The business world is all about competition and profit, if the other telecommunication companies can't handle such things, then they better quit. In business, they should have a lot of strategies in order for their company to survive or else they'll go bankrupt, such things like mergers of two companies are one strategy to be able to save another company from shutting down another reason might be, in this case, with the two telecommunication companies, they are able to widen their services to the people at the same time they're earning more profit. For their competitors rather than complaining about this issue about merging which is inevitable in the business world, they should be thinking about ways to counter the advancement of this two companies.

    ReplyDelete
  38. They will swallow up competitors. 2 big companies are good for telecom, but when they will be merge what more?. Not good for other competitors and consumers...be fair...

    ReplyDelete
  39. PLDT and Digitel are private companies so the Government has no right to stop the merging of the two companies. There’s no something wrong if they merge because it is a part of their business and in business there will always be a competition. The Globe are afraid of this issue but they had nothing to do because it’s business. The Globe Telecom should not be afraid with this issue, they must think good ideas to improve their business and they must think that many consumers they will have. :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. They are two large telecommunication companies and merging them will monopolize the market. Thus, they should find other means rather than merging because monopolizing a business is not a good idea.
