12-Year Basic Education Cycle!!!
I welcome all the freshmen students of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University. As you choose this Jesuit institution who promotes spirituality, excellence and citizenship, it is more likely of choosing to be a man and woman for others. I welcome also the old students, transferees, staff, and faculty. Moving on to some education issues of our country, the president of the philippines, tito pnoy, as all of us might know suggested some months ago the 12-year basic education cycle. This means adding two years from our current basic education program.
The suggested new program of our president was seconded by our department of education secretary, Bro. Armin Luistro, a former president of the La Salle. The K + 12, as the program called by many, have been opposed by many groups, including Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, a former president of the Ateneo de Manila University. Do you think our country is ready for this K + 12 program? Why?

Philippines need to implement k+12 to have quality education but in the other end, people of Philippines is not ready for it. 1st of all the budget. Even without k+ 12, people are having financial problem about their education. Second of all, lack of teachers, more of us don't want to be a teachers because of the low salary. 3rd of all, the government is not ready to allocate a fund to k+ 12 education.
ReplyDeleteI don't think so. Considering the fact that most of the population here in the Philippines can't afford quality education, it is clear that we are not ready yet for this K+12 program. Yes, it would help more people by increasing the chances of employment, but I think we should pay more heed to our financial difficulties. The government should also do something to at least lessen the problems.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of education, K+12 education program can really be a big help for Filipino students, since we are left behind by the other countries. But I think this isn't the right time to add two years from our current education program, because our country is experiencing poverty and corruption. Although this program can help us prepare ourselves for the future's competition, this would be a BIG PROBLEM for the less fortunate people. It's mainly because, adding two years is going to be another additional expense in schooling. Therefore, Philippines is not yet ready for it. Maybe someday, but not today...
ReplyDeleteHHmm...
ReplyDeleteQUESTION: IS OUR COUNTRY READY??
My answer goes with what i have heard from the former EIC of the Beacon News magazine say,... "No" ;
(relatively same explanation too)
because at present our country has already been having difficulties in trying to comply with the demand for new and more education/al facilities (rooms, chairs, books, etc.)because of our population including teachers.
AND
if the K+12 policy will be implemented then there will be more classes to attend to. I imagine it to be like an outbreak of students. Now we(the Filipinos) have classes outside rooms and with the K+12 policy, will there be two classes in one room and others outside, with a teacher maybe teaching two classes at a time and "A" book to a "GRouP" of students?
simply no, because the government(WE) don't have the facilities to support the students proper education.
Kuya Glenn, you have lack of info for us to read and comment on. Anyway, from what i could see, the Philippines is not YET ready for this 12-Year Basic Education Cycle. There are still a lot of things to do for the Philippines to be ready. Take for an instance the lack of teachers and lack of classrooms, school, chairs, BUDGET, and etc.I have to admit it, but we really do need this for the betterment of the quality of the education in our country. We need to abide on this for we cannot do anything anymore. Right? It is the government's decision. Let us see if this K+12 thingy would really help us, Filipinos. I was thinking, that before implementing this K+12 thing, they should see or the check the current problems and status of the Philippines. Like what I've stated above. Uhh. Going back to the question, still, Philippines is NOT YET ready for this. Maybe soon, we will... I guess... I hope so...
ReplyDeleteI think so also that implementing this K-12 education won't be successful because where in the mids of crisis and if ever this will be implemented i think there will be more possibility in increasing the uneducated children in our country because for sure the expenses will increase also. And there are still important things to fix/solve first so that we can implement this program successfully....
ReplyDeleteK-12...
ReplyDeleteYes. It can help the students to be ready for college. BUT as of now, we are following the 6 grade for Elementary and 4 years for the Highschool level, and yet there are only few who can finish this year. Why? Because of poverty. Each student needs to work for their family. Sad to say, they don't go na sa school. So, maybe the government should solve this problem first before implementing the K-12 education.
gud eve kuya Glenn,
ReplyDeletehmmm implementing k-12 is quite not a good idea, can it assure that this 2 years that has been added can assure that the students can learn more than the 6-years? I think not,as I can see all we need in order to have a quality education is that there must be a sufficient rooms, not crowded for comfort of the students to study, all students must have individual books and especially there must be a standard in hiring of teachers. Eventhough we have adequate resources if the teachers are not efficient there's no effect to quality education. So we must hired teachers using qualification standard. There's no need to K-12 programchildren. Governments should focus on how they can help the needs of the students than adding more years in elementary and high school.
in short Philippines is not ready for K+12 program... :D
ReplyDeletei don't think that the Filipinos are ready for the k+12 program at all. our country is already struggling because of poverty, and i think, if we implement the k+12 program now, we will struggle even more, especially the parents who are not stable enough to keep their children in school for that long. parents are already struggling to keep their children in school with the present situation, what more if we implement the k+12 program right away? indeed, it is a good idea to add a few extra years to school to take things more seriously, slowly and wisely. but i don't think that time will be anytime soon. maybe in a few more years when things in they typical Filipino family are more stable to handle those few extra years.
ReplyDeleteIf this said program(k-12) will be implemented, it will be a big mess to our country, probably. Philippines obviously don't deserve this k-12 program for the reason that Filipinos especially the parents who are already struggling just to feed their children. Furthermore, students are also working so that they can still go to school. What more if this k-12 will be implemented? Maybe most of the Filipinos who are suffering will feel hopeless because of financial problem. This K-12 program is said to make Filipinos more competitive. Indeed right? But with the situation of our country nowadays?? It's not the solution to produce finest and competitive students. Maybe if the Philippines is already a rich country, then they can already implement this K-12 Program. :)
ReplyDeleteAs a student, it is so confusing why the DepEd like to push this k+12 program while there's an existing problem that they should need to resolve like shortage in classrooms, facilities, appropriate ratio of books to students, sufficient number of teachers, and the like.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'm not against this said program but DepEd needs to assess everything first. There are still so many things to consider. Good if our government have enough funds for this program.
Contrary, the K+12 system has benefits for people who are looking for professional work abroad. Yes, this program will lead to a quality and competitive professionals of young Filipinos and that will uplift the development of the Philippines..
but what about the people who are struggling financially?
There are already millions of Filipino youth that has stop schooling because of hardships. The additional two years will mean additional burden to some families and will lead to more students dropping-out.
Maybe the Philippines can implement this K+12 program -- but not yet these days.
In the Philippine Education, the problem really is NOT THE LENGHT of basic education, but the CONTENT of our education. We need to have BETTER education, and NOT MORE education. right?? :))
Is our country ready for K-12 education scheme?
ReplyDeleteI really disagree on this issue because this proposal done by the government has several flaws and loopholes mainly for visible reasons. After all, I think this educational scheme is haphazardly analyzed upon proposal.
I will like to start out on a very common point - Philippine Economy. This is Philippines and not other developed country. We all know that the economic endeavor of our country as a whole will forcefully hinder this overture and will push K-12 one step away from the green light.
Second, 12 years of basic education is too much, having more years in school will not guarantee you a better educational training. It's just simply too much time consuming. That's why we have short courses from 2-year down to 6-month vocational courses for Filipinos to "finish" education in a very rapid rate. Example, Filipinos would rather choose short-term effective courses rather than the 4-year courses in order to support their families immediately after studying - considering economic struggle.
Last, I myself is a product of public high school education and I can say that educational quality in public schools is deteriorating because of the bursting augmentation in the Philippine population. A 60:1 student to teacher ratio will surely result to a half-baked education. This badly needs improvement.
With all due respect, if PNoy wants to help raise the quality of education, he should improve education instead of adding studying years. Approximately 70% of Filipinos go to public schools where government can control and improve things out such as facilities, rooms, chairs and tables, teachers, faculties and books.
It's plain simple. If we say that we have a less competent education in our country, this can be improved by giving a "better" education instead of a "longer" education which is a very frail idea.
In my opinion, the Philippines is not yet ready for this kind of educational system. The fact that the government could not even improve the facilities and the quality of education that some public schools struggle with is already a reason as to why we are not yet ready.
ReplyDeleteOur government should first do the improvements necessarily needed before they will plan on implementing the K+12 system.
I think Philippines is not ready for this kind of education. There are three problems that our country are facing. first is the lack of jobs, without a job a parent cant let his/her child to spend seven years in basic education and another five year in high school, second is the lack of school facilities. the third one is the lack of teachers.
ReplyDeleteIf Pnoy wants his countrymen to be more educated he should make some improvements that concerns the educational and livelihood status of our country
Not yet because Philippines still a poor country. Think of the percentage of the poor and rich people in our country, no doubt that majority are poor and hopeless, some of them don't even afford to educate their selves or send their children in a nice school. This new program is just a headache for us and to our parents because most of our parents are hoping us to graduate early so that we could also help them and see their fruit of suffering. As a student if we failed in some of our subjects we need to retake it, in the case of this new program retake must not be made because, if we did it’s a big deal if we refer to our expenses, age, and desire to take another course. So for me it’s better to stick in the current program on the current stage of our country.
ReplyDeleteK+12 program is good but our country is not yet ready. . because poverty is bullying our beloved country. If we implement this K+12 program while our country is still being bullied by poverty it will not help our country it will just worsen our problem.
ReplyDeletehmmm. For me this is a good idea. Definitely, this can enhance the quality education of our country. Honestly, there are people I know that even they already graduated from Elementary they still don’t know how to solve simple mathematical equations and can construct their own simple English sentence. By this 12-year education I’m sure that somehow students can get better. Another is, if we still follow the old education system we are far way behind from the other country. The short duration of the basic education program also puts the millions of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), especially the professionals, and those who intend to study abroad, at a disadvantage. Our graduates are not automatically recognized as professionals abroad. The best examples are our engineering graduates, who are condemned to international jobs not befitting their professional status due to our not having a 12-year basic education cycle.
ReplyDeleteBUT, as we all know our beloved country Philippines is in poverty. I think we are not yet ready for this new system. I guess you all know that even today some public schools lack classrooms, and the teachers are also lacking. So, by these dilemmas only how can we say that our country is already prepared for this 12+k system? DepEd must first solve the lack of classrooms, furniture and equipment, qualified teachers, and error-free textbooks.
I don't think that our country is ready for this. Most of the government schools lack basic necessities, such as classrooms and books. So even if they are going to put k + 12 into action, it's not guaranteed that the children will receive the best education. The government better solve the problem regarding the lack of facilities and equipment first.
ReplyDeleteJust like any others said, K + 12 program is good and it'll be an advantage in terms of education to Filipinos. But is our country ready for this?? Many Filipinos I think can't afford on additional 2 years of education. The government needs to fix problems first like lacking of class rooms, insufficient school equipments and facilities and etc. instead of implementing this program.
ReplyDeleteQ1..r we ready ??
ReplyDelete.most likely not.
Q2..til when ??
Talking about K-12.,majority thinks dat this country has more issues to prioritze dan adding years for education..But..,in my own opinion K-12 is a step forward to success. . If we wil consider dat poor people won’t afford longer education, let’s not forget dat public schools exist for the less fortunates..If we’l talk about current issues in education such as the lack of teachers, buildings, chairs and book., Let’s not worry so much., our government is not dumb enough not to think of these issues..Under the program K-12 , der wil funding amounting at P150 billion for:
152,569 new classrooms…
103,599 more teachers..
95.6 million more books..
13.2 million seats..
.If we’l consider that K-12 is too much for students and will only prolong student’s headaches den the problem is not the program but students themselves..If the problem is the economy, ofcors it is..but a k-12 program can soon help boost our economy..
If we are not yet ready for the K-12..then til wen ???y not now???
=) =) =)
ReplyDeleteThe idea is good but DEPED must first addressed the problem of lack of school building , school facilities and teachers. These must be solved first.
Then check if the K + 12 will eventually lead to less year in UNIVERSITIES.
In other countries, the college or university courses are only three years.
Are all the colleges and universities will agree that the degree courses they will offer will be lesser in years????
K + 12 is probably a good strategy to help students be more competitive and knowledgeable after the completion of a few extra years in education, but this is currently not an effective solution. Our country is just not ready for commencing this plan. Just not yet.
ReplyDeleteOur country is already in poverty, and adding K + 12 now will dig up a bigger hole of problems. There are a lot of less-fortunate families who are already having difficulty supplying the financial needs for their children, specifically in their education. Implementing K + 12 will make things a lot worse.
Is the Philippines READY for the K-12 education program? The government's intention is good, that is to improve our present quality of education but In my humble opinion I would say "No" because of one major factor and that is CORRUPTION! It's not that we lack funds to support this K-12 education program, we have the funds to support the K-12 but the problem is the people who handles our people's money, that is our parent's hard earned taxes. It's not the funds and manpower that is in deficit, but Greed. We have an overpopulation of unemployed qualified teachers but because of this corruption all of our resources has been squandered by those rotten hearts who posses pockets as their brains.
ReplyDeleteI believe that K+12 education can really strengthen the education of our country. Adding 2 more years in our basic education program can really assure us high rate of quality students ready for work. Because as we can see some students even though has reached their college year still don't know how to construct simple yet grammaticality correct sentences. I think DEPed suggested this program for us not to be left behind by other countries that are following this kind of program.
ReplyDeleteBut, considering the fact that in a public school wherein in one class there are 60+ students struggling to listen to their teacher especially those who are seated at the back wherein they can't hear the teacher instead they can hear the noise of the 60+ students crowding inside that room. We can see that there is a possibility that a student will learn nothing. Adding two more years will be useless if this same scenario will happen after implementing this program.
Where are not yet ready for this K+12, I think the government must first act on adding up more school because as what I've watch from a documentary on GMA about our education, wherein a group of grade schoolers have to swim across the sea to reached the other island (i think 1 kms away from their island) for them to go to school, IMAGINE THAT? A bunch of kiddos swimming island to island just to go to school!? For them to learn, for them to have a good future but we can't give them the proper education that they need, they do that every time they go to school!
Woah!? going back, i think the government must first improve our quality of education we have, add more classrooms or maybe renovate classrooms add more chairs, books and other school stuffs. I understand that we lack good teachers, that’s why Deped must first focus on this kind of things rather than become like other countries wherein not like us they are financially stable. Having this K+12 as well will add up the burden of every hardworking parents struggling just for their children to go to school. We can see young children can't go to school because of financial problems what more if we implement this kind of program during this time wherein our country is not yet firm enough for this K+12 education.
To end this, I’ll simply say that Philippines is not yet ready for this K+12 program. . . not this time. . .
This issue of the k+12 education implementation is a rear measure of trial for the country. It is not that the country is not ready for this change but the real question is whether the people who will be greatly affected are the ones who are ready for this kind of education. The problem does not lie on the number of years that will be added on the curriculum because this will only add up also to the expenses and financial allocations which most parent's will be deeply affected. I think the problem in our education is not the system but the students who takes the chances of having and enjoying good education for granted. The k+12 will surely beef up the quality education that we need in our country but if our good government will try also to solve this problem in our education in another way like building more schools which gives quality education, or help more scholars who are really competent and productive to also help our country. Yes, we must strengthen our quality education but also think of the people who can't afford to make their children reach to college, or even in high school. I think that our country and the people are not yet ready for this new change in the education curriculum. Like i once heard my teacher saying 'Development is change, but not all change is development.
ReplyDeleteI think the K+12 program is actually a good idea, we've been waiting for changes here in our country and here it is, if this will improve the kind of education we have, then why not? But I think the government especially the DepEd should think about this thoroughly, how and when they should implement this kind of program, since there are a lot people who are not ready for an additional 2 years of education, the unfortunate, struggling just to go to school. Hopefully the DepEd would give out some incentives like scholarships, school supplies and the like for those who can't afford for an additional two years of education.
ReplyDeleterequired ba english dito ? ^^, GoodDay to all fallowers of this blog. For me it's not the k+12 or adding 2 years to our basic education is the solution to our country. If we want change let start it with ourselves. Teachers should not be blamed for the poor quality of education we have in the Philippines…we need more instructional materials, laboratories, and most of all teacher-student ratio must be lessened to give more attention to each pupil’s needs; the textbook-pupil ratio should also be considered. Authorities implementing any rules in the DEPED must study the classroom situations first in a public school setting before deciding on any solutions. if DEPED knows best for all the students one thing for sure is they also know the possibly negative affects for us. Regarding from the facilities, ang ating mga kababayan ay hindi rin basta2x makaka afford sa k+12 na inaasahan na darating. Dahil sa ating kahirapan na tinatamasan ay hindi ito maging madali. right ? YEAH! i know right.. hmm GodBless Philippines.
ReplyDeleteI don't think that K+12 program is a good idea for our country. As what's been observed, our population is growing fast and most of our people are UNEMPLOYED, think of the people who can't afford education. No education will result to unemployment, thus making our society poor.
ReplyDeleteK+12 is good for education purposes but the negative side will be the parent’s burden of spending such money for their children. There are many more things to take care of, like corruption etc. I believe that Philippines has a high standard of education, why not stick to it?.
ReplyDeleteI think that we are not yet ready.this will be a very big change for our school.for my opinion, this should not be implemented. Our school system now is much better that adding the K+12 program.
ReplyDeleteas for my opinion, our country is not yet ready for such program. first problem that we are going to encounter is that the lack of financial support. the program will give additional burden to our parents since it adds two more years of education. the government must improve first the economy of the country before applying the K+12 program.
ReplyDeleteIs our country ready for the K+12 program? Nope, I do not think so. I believe that the government should atleast for now, clean up the mess of the Arroyo administration, and deal with the issues pertaining to corruption, poverty and the like. Adding two more years in our educational system will merely exacerbate the situation of the Philippines today. I admit, this K+12 program seems very appealing to me. But this, without a doubt, will be useless if our country is still undergoing severe problems and issues that I believe will greatly affect the future of many Filipinos. So, for now, I say no to K+12 program. Maybe soon, if we were already able to resolve all the issues, then I can say, Yes, we are ready!
ReplyDeleteThe country is not ready for K12. The current education system clearly has its problems and deficiencies that needs to be taken cared of. The Lack of resources such as tables, chairs, books, capable teachers and not to mention the budget. And changing the system will not solve the problem but will just be another problem for our country to solve.
ReplyDeleteK+12 program is actually a good idea because with enough education, the graduates can be competent enough to land a better job and this would be very helpful especially for those who wants to work abroad as professionals. But the problem is does the government have sufficient budget for additional teachers, classrooms, chairs, books, etc.? They must first solve the lack of classrooms, free textbooks and qualified teachers. If this K+12 program will be implemented this will be additional problem to our country. As you can see now we have lack of schools, classrooms, chairs, teachers, etc. and many parents cannot afford the tuition fee of their children, what more if they will add two years of education. If they implement K+12 the number of high school and college graduates will decrease in our country and many Filipinos can’t afford on additional 2 years of education and parents will struggle because of financial problem. They should focus first on how they can help the needs of the students.
ReplyDeleteGod Bless.. :)
...thank you...:))...
ReplyDeletegood idea sya sir pero i dont think the Philippines is ready for this. Pero in a larger sense, it is a good idea :) . para mahasa pa ng mabuti ang mga students..
ReplyDelete
